Animal Helpline is the institution serving since 3 years. It is now amongst the helpline where a common man calls, when he sees a stray animal or bird injured or sick. This institution is mainly for the ownerless i.e. stray animals and birds who when injured have nobody to nurse. Just call up the helpline and name the type of animal or bird and help would be on the way to treat them that too free of cost.

This institution has started its sincere work with the help of a mobile van that moved in the entire city of Ahmedabad use to attend 50-60 calls (cases) per day. It has started with 2 VET doctors and 3 dedicated persons working for it to save the innocent, speechless, injured & sick stray animals and birds.

The basic work of the institution is to nurse the injured or sick animal and to leave it at the same spot immediately after its treatment and come the next day to look for the health condition and improvements. The same is done till they find the animal back to normal. But this way of nursing had its own drawbacks. At times it so happens that an injured bird or animal is treated and left at the same place from where it is picked up and the very next day we do not find it there. It is commonly seen in the cases where the animal develops maggots or has undergone some kind of an operation in order to save its life.

The cry of each and every stray animal and bird was heard by a helpline since last
3 years. We use to feel hurt and helpless at times when the animals who were in very bad shape required more medical attention and we on the other hand had no place to nurse them. So finally with all the teams hard work we have successfully opened a permanent Veterinary hospital and shelter house for the animals who need proper and long term treatment or are permanently handicapped.

To run this institution smoothly and in a better way, we have given an application to the Government Charity Registration Office on the 1st of this year. By doing so we are now registered under the name of ASHA FOUNDATION, in which ASHA stands for Animals Shelter and Hospital in Ahmedabad. Our institution is going to be registered by May 2007 under the registration no. E/17613/06.

The institute started operating by this name from the 1st of January 2007 with its motto to ease or free the suffering animals and birds from the pain or deformity and diseases, whatsoever and to give them a new and healthy life.

According to our survey there are approximately 3 lakh stray dogs in our city itself. Apart from stray dogs there are many more animals happened to be treated by us. Some of them are cows, bulls, cats, monkeys, donkeys, camel and birds like vulture, kite, eagle, crow, pigeon, migratory birds and even some reptiles.

It has come to our notice that day by day the number of calls that we are receiving have increased since 3 years. We have, as such, made arrangements for Ambulance Van with 3 other rescue Vehicles, some medicines in stock, 9 Cannels for the dogs, 6 cages for the birds and monkeys, shade for the cattle’s and an operation theatre with the primary surgical equipments. We also have expert dog catchers and bird handlers who do excellent job. We have a team of the good and helpful volunteers who are also the animal lovers; helping us to grow.

We are the only institution in the city working for the stray animals and birds. Our doctors and staff members are always on the visit to treat the sick and injured animals and birds. When we notice that the animal or bird needs intensive care and treatment we transfer them to our hospital. We do not levy any kind of charge or fee to the people who call us. In fact we appreciate their effort to save the injured animal.

Our institution is a non-profitable organization for the stray animals and birds. We do not receive any kind of grants or help from the Indian government. We only get help in the from of charity i.e in the form of donation. The work that we do is only for charity. Our performances are often published and appreciated by the newspapers and media which is a kind of reward for us. ASHA FOUNDATION WORKS 365 DAYS A WEEK for the animals and birds.

We find our foundation to be at a developing stage and for its development we also arrange camps in the village areas which are again free of charge! In order to reduce the number of stray dogs in our city we have also started the ABC program i.e. the Animal Birth Control Program which is on voluntary basis.

We, the people of Asha Foundation have also tried to make people aware about the cruelty done to the street animals and times even tried to explain them not to do so to the innocent & speechless animals.
