ASHA Foundation works for street animals and birds, providing free treatment for the city of Ahmedabad. Mr Harmesh Bhatt, a lawyer, started the ASHA Foundation 3 years ago. The facilities include a mobile clinic, an animal hospital and a shelter. The foundation employs 8 full-time staff members, including a veterinary surgeon, animal catchers, a driver and a caretaker. The foundation has 2 ambulances, half an acre of land and an operating theatre. A second operating theatre and consultation room are currently being built. There are 24 cages and kennels for birds and dogs.
To provide free treatment to all street animals and birds, removing them from pain and trying to give them a new and healthy life.
To make a great hospital for street animals and birds and start a sterilization project to reduce the city’s street dog population.
The people of the city phone the ASHA Foundation if they find a suffering street animal. The foundation operates 24 hours a day all year round as a free service. Depending on the situation, staff members either treat animals on the spot or transfer to them to the hospital cum shelter for further treatment, observation and eventual release back to the place where they were found. The foundation gets up to 40-50 cases per day and is the only one of its kind in the city.
