In Ahmedabad city, 300,000 stray dogs live on the streets and they have not been vaccinated against rabies; every day 35 to 45 street dogs die because of rabies. About 3,774 humans are bitten in Ahmedabad every year by stray dogs. Human hospitals don’t have enough anti-rabies vaccines and private hospitals have the vaccine but the cost is too much for the majority of the population.
ASHA has started an anti-rabies project and give the vaccine, as well as dewormers to street dogs. We aim to re-vaccinate dogs in each area every year so that immunity is maintained. Volunteers and vet students help with this project. A lot of cattle and buffalo also suffer from rabies. However, there is currently no cattle vaccination program.
